Nillumbik Shire Council sought a platform to elevate engagement through co-design and a client-centric approach
Nillumbik Shire Council was seeking a community engagement platform that would not only elevate their public engagement but also be grounded in a client-centric approach that values co-design and listens to the needs of all users, including smaller regional councils. They partnered with Civio to co-create a future-focused platform that has transformed how they connect with residents.
Nillumbik Shire Council needed to enhance community engagement. Their fragmented tools and separate mapping product created data silos and coordination challenges. They sought a unified platform with strong geospatial capabilities to engage across their rural region effectively.
Nillumbik strategically chose Civio for its enhanced functionality, including built-in mapping tools, and the opportunity to form a genuine partnership. They valued Civioʼs focus on delivering real value, responsive support and a platform that evolves through continuous improvement.
Aligned with a team that listens and innovates, Nillumbik quickly became both a champion of Civio and an active participant in co-design.
The migration to Civio was quick and largely automated, allowing 144 legacy projects and 2,700 users to be transitioned with minimal disruption.
Nillumbikʼs first major engagement on the platform was their Council Plan, a cornerstone initiative for regional councils, which drew strong community participation and valuable feedback.
In the weeks that followed, they launched a wide range of projects in quick succession, from budget consultations to understanding youth priorities, showcasing the platformʼs flexibility and ease of use.
The ongoing relationship between Nillumbik and Civio reflects a genuine strategic partnership. Regular catch-ups evolved into meaningful working sessions, where Nillumbik shared insights on upcoming engagement initiatives and helped shape Civioʼs product roadmap with practical, real-world input.
Nillumbik has played an active role in Civioʼs ongoing development, not just as a user but as a collaborator. Their hands-on feedback has helped turn ideas into practical features, ensuring tools like Participatory Budgeting are grounded in real council workflows. Their input has also helped guide what gets built next, with features like the card list emerging in direct response to their needs.
For Nillumbikʼs engagement team, the move to Civio delivered an immediate lift in day-to-day experience. Features became easier to use, reducing admin effort and allowing the team to focus on strategy rather than workarounds. Quick access to support meant questions were resolved fast, and projects were launched without delays.
This momentum led to strong results. The team delivered high-impact projects in rapid succession, building community trust and driving participation up, across topics from council budgets to youth priorities.
